Terms of Service

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using PortuStories — whether through the website at portustories.com or the PortuStories Android application — you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use our services.

2. Description of Service

PortuStories provides an educational platform for learning European Portuguese (PT-PT) through interactive stories, document reading, vocabulary building, and grammar exercises. We offer both a free tier and a premium subscription.

3. User Accounts

You may use certain features of PortuStories without creating an account. To access premium features and sync your progress across devices, you must create an account using Google Sign-In.

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account and for all activity that occurs under it. You must notify us immediately at dxk@portustories.com if you suspect any unauthorised use of your account.

4. Premium Subscription

• Premium subscriptions are offered on a monthly or annual basis and are processed through Google Play (Android) or our web payment provider.
• Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current billing period.
• You may cancel your subscription at any time through your Google Play account settings or through your profile within the app. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; no partial refunds are issued for unused time.
• We reserve the right to change subscription pricing with 30 days' notice. Existing subscribers will be notified by email.

5. Intellectual Property

All content on PortuStories — including but not limited to stories, articles, audio recordings, document mock-ups, translations, illustrations, and the underlying software — is the intellectual property of PortuStories or its content licensors and is protected by copyright law.

You are granted a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to access and use our content for your own private educational purposes. You may not reproduce, distribute, modify, create derivative works from, or commercially exploit any content without our express written permission.

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Use the platform for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable regulations.
• Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the service or its systems.
• Scrape, harvest, or systematically download content without our written consent.
• Use automated tools, bots, or scripts to interact with the platform.
• Share your premium account credentials with others.
• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble any part of our software.

7. Content Accuracy

PortuStories strives to provide accurate and high-quality European Portuguese (PT-PT) language content. However, we do not warrant that our content is entirely free from errors, omissions, or inaccuracies. Language learning content is provided for educational purposes and should not be relied upon as professional translation or legal advice.

8. Third-Party Services

PortuStories integrates third-party services including Google Firebase (authentication, analytics), Google AdSense (advertising on the free tier), and Google Cloud Text-to-Speech (premium audio). Use of these services is subject to Google's own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the practices of any third-party service providers.

9. Disclaimers & Limitation of Liability

PortuStories is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free service.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, PortuStories shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of — or inability to use — the service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

10. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Portugal. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Lisbon, Portugal, without prejudice to any mandatory consumer protection rights you may have under the law of your country of residence.

11. Changes to These Terms

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. We will provide notice of material changes by updating the effective date above and, where appropriate, by notifying you via the app or email. Your continued use of PortuStories after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms.
